School Jury Education Project

Educating D.C.’s youth on the power and impact of jury service.

What is the School Jury Education Program (SJEP)?

SJEP first launched in the 1990s as a way to inspire and engage D.C.’s students. Every year CCE, in partnership with Street Law at Georgetown Law, recruits a team of local judges and attorneys to help inform students about jury service. Students learn the importance of jury duty, watch an engaging trial video, and then participate in a mock deliberation with their classmates as fellow “jurors.” Students leave the program with a better understanding and appreciation of the importance of jury service in our democracy, as well as increased enthusiasm for serving as a juror. This program also offers students opportunities to find mentors and establish long-term relationships with leaders in the legal profession.

“I knew juries were important but I didn’t realize just how important they are.”

—McKinley Technology High School student

How Can I Volunteer for SJEP? How Can I Get SJEP at My School?

CCE and Street Law are currently recruiting volunteers for sessions between January 7-16, 2025. Volunteers are expected to donate 2-3 hours of their time to review the lesson plan and attend a class where they will present the lesson plan. Street Law class sessions are typically 65-90 minutes. CCE and Street Law will coordinate with schools to arrange each visit's logistics and staff will be available to answer questions prior to and onsite on the day ofthe visit.
