CCE part of debate in addressing crosswalk dangers

Should DC reduce the $250 fine for failing to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk if cameras can catch violators in the act?

That is the latest debate following a May 30 DC Council Judiciary Committee hearing on pedestrian and bicycle safety in DC. The hearing included a specific focus on the recent CCE report, Protecting Pedestrians. Read our testimony at this hearing from our online Digital Library.

CCE’s Pedestrian Safety Committee was a key advocate in 2008 for increasing the fine amount for failure to stop from $50 to $250. This increase brought DC in line with many other jurisdictions in the country.

Crosswalks in DC can be particularly dangerous, as reported in TBD.com on June 13. The DC Department of Transportation found that about half of pedestrian crashes, legal or not, occur in the crosswalks.
