Distracted walkers the subject of NPR news quiz

In the August 4 broadcast of NPR's news quiz Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me!, panelists were asked about current events. One of the answers this week was - texting while walking. Listen to a clip of the broadcast here.

Distracted walkers were the subject of CCE's report Protecting Pedestrians, which was released in March of this year. Local media quickly turned their attention to this issue. (See our previous news post on this coverage.)

Since then, the issue of using mobile devices that limit attention while crossing the street has attracted attention across the country, as indicated by mention of the topic in this national NPR broadcast.

On August 9, the Washington Post published new data compiled from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regarding rates of deaths among pedestrians. The article cites the NHTSA report, indicating that in 2010 "a pedestrian was killed every two hours and injured every eight minutes in traffic crashes."
