DC Council legislation features CCE Reentry Recommendations

On September 25, CCE Director Ted Whitehouse and Executive Director June Kress presented CCE's testimony before the DC Council Judiciary Committee on the Reentry Faciliation Amendment Act of 2012. The proposed legislation is based  on the research and recommendations in CCE's 2011 report, Unlocking Employment Opportunity. The proposed legislation:

  • incorporates CCE's recommendation about establishing liability protection for DC employers that hire persons with a criminal record (see page 15 of the CCE reentry report for a full description); and
  • includes the concept of a certificate of good standing program (see page 17 of the CCE reentry report).

The proposed legislation also would amend the Criminal Record Sealing Act of 2006, for which CCE provided the initial research and advocacy in our report, Creating an Expungement Statute for the District of Columbia.
